4 rolls from kisso... best sushi ever

Chris and I met up with our friend Jon for sushi tonight. I’ve been trying to arrange this dinner for a while, but its been pushed to fruition because Jon is moving away from Philadelphia. And not just to the suburbs either, he’s heading to Oakland, CA next week. I’m super sad that he’s moving so far away! Jon’s become one of my good friends here- he’s the genius behind the quail-egg-mushroom-paté pizza, and our parties just won’t be the same without him. (He’s also the one who told me and Chris about Kisso in the first place, so its fitting that we had our goodbye dinner there.) Over the time that I’ve known him, he’s become one of my favorite people to hang out with, and he will be sorely missed. Happy travels, Jon, and I hope that your new job brings you back to Philly sometime soon… we’ll have a spare room ready and waiting for you, and a kitchen ready for fun experiments.

Everything came together for quite a show on Friday. Of course, I was nervous as anything (which I definitely need to work on) but I tried not to show it too much. It feels good to have the performance behind me, its been a little stressful preparing for it. But I think the work we put into it paid off, we got lots of compliments. It was a very late night though, so all Saturday I was rather exhausted. Breakfast at Carman’s Country Kitchen was a great way to start out the day. Later, sushi with John (it was a bit of a weekend of decadence), and some drinks over at Charlie’s. A late night led to a late start on Sunday, but some sewing with Michelle and a trip to Terrain with Cheslea made it a full day anyway.
Terrain is amazing. Such great displays! The place is full of very inspiring plants and decor. I could spend hours and hours there. I need a plan for my garden before I go back, so that I don’t get too distracted. I did buy something though- a new plant for my hippo, since I managed to kill the last one, unfortunately. I hope I can keep this one alive, its pretty cool looking. I think I’ll pot it tomorrow, too exhausted to do anything else tonight.

Nice to settle in to pizza and a movie after such a full weekend. I still have quite a few projects on my plate though, so I’m not completely off the hook. A window blanket, some way-over-belated mitts for a friend, more work on my blanket, KK’s documentary… I’m sure I have other things thrown in there, too, that I can’t remember right now. But at least there isn’t a real deadline for any of it, so I can take my time, for now.

It was a long week, lots of days staying late at work, and unfortunately not a very big feeling of accomplishment at the end of it all. But I got the days off for a trip to Rehobeth with Chris’s family, so that is something relaxing to look forward to.

Jen and Dee Dee at the dog park

Jen and Dee Dee at the dog park

As annoying as the whole week was, at least it ended well, with a visit from Jen and Dee Dee to plan our hiking trip. Dee Dee has an awesome little backpack that she can carry her water and food in… and she’s a little ball of energy, so I’m sure she’ll be fine for the three day trip. I’m excited to go backpacking with a dog. Its a new experience for all three of us. We walked Dee Dee to the dog park, which is a whole new experience for me. Its a different kind of culture- I can defiantly see how having a dog can be a great way to meet people. You’re sort of forced to interact while the dogs get friendly. We were eventually chased out of the park by a hump-happy bulldog, but it was a nice walk anyway.

Spent some nice time at Ultimo reading and knitting….mmmm they have some very tasty pastries there. I’m torn between the lime bars and the raspberry lindsor for my favorite. I bought an awesome grey Ultimo shirt- Usually I don’t buy shirts for places I frequent, I feel a little like That Guy wearing the shirt of the band he’s going to see. But I am all about Ultimo. Seriously, if you live in Philadelphia and you haven’t been by yet, you are really missing out.I highly recommend their mochas. And you haven’t had real coffee until you try their special blends. Aaron takes great care with the brews he selects and you can really tell. Also- word is the beer is on its way. Ultimo can only get better.

Best Dessert Ever

Best Dessert Ever

Best plan of the weekend: rootbeer floats. Such a simple dessert, but so satisfying in the heat of the summer. Really good following our dinner of fish (with a really good kikomon marinade) veggies and couscous.

The long days at work sort of wiped me out for productivity this weekend, but I did get some work on the blanket done as well as some further headway on the docs I’m working on. Chris and I tried the new-ish sushi place on Passyunk, and were less than impressed. I think Kisso has spoiled me for your average sushi, no place I’ve been has been able to compare. Some movies and some knitting will wrap up Sunday night, hopefully with another root beer float. Oh weekend, I wish it could continue.

Yum yum yum yum. Laura (creator of the Obama cake for the election party) decided to make sushi for our darts party this past saturday. (Yeah, I really like themed parties). No one got hurt, so I’d call it a successful party. I had a bit of a misunderstanding, I thought Laura was coming over to my house to make the sushi. I got so excited! The last time I made sushi was so much fun! Although, I’m sure it was half the company half the food. Anyway, she made it at her place and brought it over in a clever tupperware container. Still tasty.

On a crafty note, I’m getting further along my Hew wrap top.. but its not quite photogenic yet (although I’ll probably post a photo anyway). I’m pretty sure I’m going to need another ball or two of yarn to finish it out, though. I need to get back to the LYS soon, because its all hand painted yarn, and I hope whatever is left will mostly match.
Its getting warm, which makes me happy. And the snow has melted which is lovely for the daily commute.
The troupe of girls that I dance with (we’re calling ourselves some variation of ragtag tribal) is performing this Sunday. Hopefully I’ll have some nice photos of us not looking terrified to post. :-)
